WE ARE THE FIRST in Nigeria to develop a professional frontline course for security operatives, along with a professional security card awarded upon successful completion of rigorous vetting and passing the PPS Level 2 certification.
Through our research in security studies, we have identified a critical gap in community-focused security education across Africa. Many security personnel responsible for safeguarding individuals, homes, and businesses lack formal training or recognised standards. This issue has become more pronounced in the wake of COVID-19, which has sparked widespread protests, often leading to vandalism, violence, and, tragically, loss of life.
For instance, in Nigeria, security officers are frequently deployed with minimal assessment, often receiving their uniforms and assignments after only a brief evaluation. The consequences of inadequate vetting and training are evident in tragic cases such as the sexual assault of Dami Olusola by a school security officer in Lagos (May 2023) and the alleged murder of Abigail Ahenkan by her security guard in Kumasi, Ghana (September 2023). Unfortunately, these incidents are part of a broader pattern observed across the continent.
Rather than waiting for systemic change, Secex has taken proactive steps by implementing a rigorous due diligence and training system as an entry requirement for our Level 2 Professional Physical Security course. This program addresses pressing security concerns, drawing insights from movements like EndSARS, the impact of COVID-19, the military coups that have shaped Africa’s security landscape in recent years and the impact these bring to our doorstep. In addition to core security principles, the course covers essential skills such as first aid and effective communication. Furthermore, we will conduct audits of organisations that engage our services to ensure ongoing accountability and continuous improvement.
Similar to the SIA Licence for security operatives in the UK, Secex will issue security officers a Secex Approved Card (SAC Card) upon successful completion of a thorough vetting process and the Level 2 Professional Physical Security Course. Threats around us are constantly changing, making it essential for security officers to undergo annual refresher training tailored to address the latest security challenges and emerging risks.
At Secex, we define ourselves as a security service dedicated to ongoing improvement and meaningful impact. By working collaboratively with communities, organisations, and security personnel, we strive to enhance safety and security. While we may not have all the solutions, we remain committed to making a tangible difference, one step at a time.
